Summary

Frank Parker is a patient housed within a covert Central Intelligence Agency psychiatric facility. His condition stems from a mission undertaken two years earlier, during which he was captured and subjected to prolonged torture. Although Parker has demonstrated a significant degree of recovery, he continues to exhibit psychological instability.

In the aftermath of a major national crisis, Parker is identified as the optimal candidate to operate a classified temporal, displacement device known as Back‑Step, a high‑technology spherical apparatus capable of sending an individual up to seven days into the past. The process is hazardous and physically demanding, but it enables Parker to attempt to avert catastrophic events before they occur.

Oversight of the Back‑Step programme is entrusted to several key figures. Donovan, the project’s chief military adviser, advocates strongly for Parker, in part because Parker previously saved his life. He is joined by Dr. Isaac Mentor, a senior medical authority, and Olga Vukavitch, a highly skilled and intellectually distinguished scientist. The sole dissenting voice within the team is Nate Ramsey, who maintains that Parker’s psychological condition renders him unfit for such missions.
