Summary
Mark Scout, an employee in Lumon Industries’ Macrodata Refinement (MDR) division, learns that he has been promoted to department head following the abrupt departure of his colleague Petey. His initial responsibility in this new role is to oversee the induction of Helly, Petey’s replacement. Helly regains consciousness in a Lumon conference room with no recollection of her identity or circumstances. After receiving a formal orientation and being informed of her name, she attempts to leave the facility but discovers she is unable to do so. A recorded message explains that she has undergone Lumon’s severance procedure, a process that partitions an individual’s memories to create a distinct workplace persona that exists solely within the company.
Outside the severed environment, the external version of Mark. formerly a university professor and still grieving the death of his wife, Gemma, resides in the Lumon supported community of Kier. He unexpectedly encounters Petey, who claims to have successfully reversed his supposedly irreversible severance. Upon returning home, Mark interacts with his neighbour, known to him as Mrs. Selvig, unaware that she is in fact Harmony Cobel, his senior manager within Lumon.
