Summary
Dr. Jonathan MacKensie, an erudite and urbane scholar, serves as a professor of Anthropology at the Georgetown Institute of Science and Technology in Washington, D.C. He is the son of the late Dr. Leonard MacKensie, a Nobel laureate long associated with the Institute. Owing to his father’s reputation, Jonathan is frequently mistaken for the MacKensie of Georgetown, a misunderstanding he corrects with polite haste and a trace of disappointment.
Deeply absorbed in both his teaching responsibilities and his research, specifically a paper examining the possibility of a bicameral brain in Ramapithecus and related hominids, Jonathan is unexpectedly approached by his department chair, Dr. Juliana Moorhouse. Suggesting that his forthcoming research grant may depend upon his cooperation, Moorhouse pressures him into accepting the directorship of her newly established Paranormal Research Unit, an initiative intended to investigate unexplained phenomena. The Unit’s first assignment involves reported poltergeist activity in a small town in northern California.
