Summary
Billy Batson, a teenager, is chosen by a group of immortal elders to serve as their champion on Earth. These elders, Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury, form the acronym Shazam, and when Batson speaks the word, he is struck by magical lightning that transforms him into the adult superhero Captain Marvel. The transformation replaces his ordinary clothing with red tights featuring a lightning‑bolt emblem and a white cape. When Captain Marvel utters the word again, the magical lightning reverses the process, returning him to his teenage form.
In contrast to the comic‑book version, the television adaptation does not feature Captain Marvel battling supervillains. In the comics, Billy Batson works for a television station, but in the programme he appears to be on a perpetual road journey, only occasionally referencing his job. Billy travels across the country in an RV with his mentor, known simply as Mentor, seeking to right wrongs, promote understanding, and uphold justice. At the beginning of each episode, the elders appear to Billy and offer cryptic guidance that he does not immediately comprehend; by the end of the episode, he learns the meaning of their advice, typically through helping individuals resolve everyday problems, often with the assistance of Captain Marvel. Each episode includes a moral lesson on topics such as honesty or good citizenship, and to ensure the message is clear, Captain Marvel appears after the adventure to explain the lesson directly to the audience.
