Summary
In 1993, the Year of the Rooster, the Yamabuki family marks the first day of the New Year at their residence. The atmosphere, however, is far from celebratory. The parents, Mr. and Mrs. Yamabuki, are approaching a marital dissolution, casting a pall over the household. Seeking distraction from the domestic tension, the three Yamabuki sisters, Yukiko (16), Tsukiko (13), and Hanako (11) , visit a local karaoke box.
During their outing, the sisters unexpectedly encounter Otori‑sama, the divine rooster associated with the zodiac sign governing the year. In traditional belief, each of the twelve zodiac deities is entrusted with safeguarding peace and happiness throughout its respective year. For 1993, this responsibility falls to Otori‑sama. Despite this role, the deity has spent the opening days of the year indulging in gambling and has subsequently developed an obsession with karaoke, rendering him unable to perform his duties.
Recognizing his inability to maintain the year’s harmony, Otori‑sama appeals to the sisters for assistance. Although they initially reject what they perceive as an unreasonable and self‑serving request, the deity offers a compelling incentive: in exchange for their cooperation, he promises to mediate and restore perfect harmony between their estranged parents.
