Summary
The Institute for Cybernetics and Futurology operates a supercomputer that simulates a world inhabited by over 9,000 unaware identity units. After the project’s director, Professor Vollmer, dies under mysterious circumstances, his successor, Dr. Fred Stiller, begins investigating and discovers that colleagues and events are inexplicably disappearing from memory and record.
A contact unit within the simulation, Einstein, reveals that Stiller’s own reality is itself a higher‑level simulation. As Stiller attempts to expose the truth, he is framed for multiple deaths and forced into hiding. He eventually learns that Eva, introduced into the simulation after Vollmer’s death, is the link to the world above. Eva explains that Stiller is a model of a real individual who once controlled the higher‑level simulation. In the final confrontation, she transfers the simulated Stiller’s consciousness into the real world, saving him from his programmed death.
