Summary
The bionic man, portrayed by Lee Majors, was introduced in a 1974 television film in which astronaut and NASA test pilot Colonel Steve Austin is critically injured in a catastrophic crash that destroys both legs, an arm, and an eye. At a cost of six million dollars, Dr. Rudy Wells and his team reconstruct him with nuclear‑powered limbs and a bionic eye, granting him exceptional strength, speed, and vision.
Although initially unable to accept his transformation and briefly suicidal, Austin eventually adapts to his new condition and becomes an operative for the Office of Strategic Investigations (OSI), a covert government agency led by Oscar Goldman. His assignments span political intrigue, criminal investigations, scientific crises, personal dramas, and occasional science‑fiction scenarios involving space exploration and extra-terrestrial encounters.
