Summary
The series follows Mike, Nikki, Maggie and their families, who reside beneath the vast, gleaming white dishes of a space‑tracking station situated in the centre of the Australian outback. As children of scientists, they inhabit an environment shaped by advanced research and international collaboration, yet they confront the everyday challenges of adolescence under highly unusual circumstances. Their home functions as a literal and figurative window onto the universe.
Students from around the world travel to the station to undertake space‑related experiments sponsored by the Wright Foundation, an organisation devoted to promoting science education. Nikki, aged thirteen, is deeply interested in scientific study and aspires to become the first human to reach Mars. Mike, fourteen, rejects scientific pursuits entirely; his interests revolve around music, particularly Jimi Hendrix, and the freedom he finds in riding his horse and playing his guitar, which he believes provide all the insight he needs into life’s meaning.
Amid this backdrop, Tony, Mike’s father, and Marie, Nikki’s mother, begin a tentative romantic relationship. Nikki and Mike experience similar feelings toward each other, navigating the complexities of young affection. Meanwhile, nine‑year‑old Maggie frequently disrupts the activities of those around her, adding a further layer of domestic unpredictability to life at the tracking station.
