Summary
Quinn Mallory, a young physicist, constructs a device capable of generating a stable wormhole in the basement of his San Francisco home. The mechanism enables passage to parallel Earths, each representing a distinct variation of political, cultural, or environmental history. During an early test of the technology, Mallory inadvertently transports several individuals along with himself: Professor Maximillian Arturo, his university mentor; Wade Wells, a computer technician and close friend; and Rembrandt “Crying Man” Brown, a former soul singer whose vehicle is caught in the vortex as he drives past Mallory’s house. The group becomes stranded in an ongoing sequence of alternate realities, compelled to slide from world to world in the hope of eventually returning home.
