Summary
The series is set in 1999, in a period when the ozone layer has been almost entirely depleted, clean water supplies have collapsed, the national police force has been privatised, and the Labour Party has become bankrupt. Governance of the United Kingdom has been assumed by a clandestine organisation known as the Loyal and Modern Order of Thatchers. The longstanding North–South divide has intensified to the point of partition, creating two distinct sectors: an affluent South and an impoverished North, separated by a single remaining border post located in northern England.
Giles St. Clair, a wealthy and privileged southerner, is the son of Lord Tweksbury, proprietor of the world’s largest corporation. In contrast, Gavin Sinclair is a young man from the Scottish slums, regarded as a no‑hoper , despite holding four A‑levels, and is expected to spend his life working on the factory floor. In the era of computerised administration, a clerical error results in the accidental exchange of the two men’s identities. With no avenue for appeal, they are compelled to adopt each other’s assigned destinies: Giles is relegated to a labouring existence in a Glasgow factory, while Gavin is unexpectedly elevated into the privileged world of the southern elite.
