Summary
Snowpiercer is set in 2026, seven years after a global ecological catastrophe transforms the planet into a frozen wasteland. The disaster results from the deployment of CW‑7, a chemical compound intended to counteract rapid climate warming but which instead triggers severe ecocide. The narrative follows the surviving human population, who inhabit a continuously operating luxury train designed to sustain life in the extreme conditions.
The train, engineered and constructed by the eccentric industrialist Mr. Joseph Wilford, comprises 1,001 carriages and completes approximately 2.7 circumnavigations of the Earth each year. Its perpetual motion generates the energy required to maintain habitable temperatures, preventing passengers from succumbing to the surrounding freeze.
Since the onset of the catastrophe, the train’s inhabitants have become stratified into rigid social classes, resulting in persistent conflict over the imposed hierarchy and the unequal distribution of scarce resources. The series examines themes of class conflict, systemic injustice, and the political dynamics of survival within a closed and highly regulated environment.
