Summary
Space is a dramatic chronicle spanning the period from the end of the Second World War through the rise, triumphs, and eventual decline of the United States space programme. The narrative begins in the late 1940s, when the American government covertly sought to recruit leading German rocket scientists in the aftermath of Nazi Germany’s collapse. It follows the early development of American rocketry, the emergence of the national space effort, and the landmark achievements of human spaceflight, from test‑pilot missions and orbital walks to the Apollo lunar landings of the early 1970s, before charting NASA’s diminished fortunes in the early 1980s.
