Summary
Set in the near future, Space Command is depicted as a global organisation responsible for directing, maintaining, and executing Earth’s expanding programme of space exploration. The series centres on the professional development of Frank Anderson, a young trainee who acquires experience across the organisation’s principal divisions, including interplanetary transport, satellite operations, scientific research, and exploratory missions.
Each episode follows Frank as he undertakes assignments within one of these specialised branches, allowing both the character and the audience to learn about the practical conditions of space as understood by scientists of the early 1950s. The programme deliberately avoids narrative elements such as espionage, romance, extra-terrestrial monsters, or space piracy. Its chief writer, Alf Harris, sought to present stories grounded in scientific plausibility, adventures that could occur only within the environment of outer space and were informed by contemporary scientific predictions.
