Summary
Space Odyssey presents a fictional crewed expedition across the Solar System, employing its narrative framework to introduce and explain scientific principles related to spaceflight and the physical characteristics of the planets.
In the near future, five astronauts, Tom Kirby, Yvan Grigorev, John Pearson, Zoë Lessard, and Nina Sulman, depart Earth aboard Pegasus, a mile‑long nuclear‑powered spacecraft. After six weeks, the vessel reaches Venus, where Lessard and Grigorev land in Orpheus. Grigorev conducts a brief surface walk, visiting the Soviet Venera 14 lander, and narrowly returns to Orpheus after overheating. The lander ascends and docks with Pegasus, which then proceeds to Mars.
In Martian orbit, the crew refuels from a pre‑placed supply ship. Kirby, Pearson, and Sulman land near Melas Chasma in Ares to search for subsurface water using a balloon‑borne rover, Charlie. A solar flare forces both surface and orbital crews to shelter temporarily. Once conditions improve, Charlie is guided to the canyon floor and detects a small quantity of liquid water. A dust storm interrupts operations, but the sample is retrieved, and Ares later reunites with Pegasus.
The mission continues toward Jupiter, using a solar flyby for acceleration. Passing Mercury without landing, the crew activates an artificial magnetic field to withstand intense radiation, shutting down non‑essential systems during the manoeuvre. After the successful flyby, Pegasus heads outward and performs an unplanned close pass of a binary asteroid system due to inaccurate data from mission control.
