Summary
In the year 2100, the indigenous civilisations of Earth, Mars, and Venus unite to form the United Galactic Organization (UGO). Its military arm, Space Patrol, is depicted through the missions of a small unit commanded by Captain Larry Dart, accompanied by two humanoid crew members: Slim, an elfin Venusian, and Husky, a stocky Martian noted for his enthusiasm for sausages. The team operates two interplanetary craft, Galasphere 347 and Galasphere 024.
Technical support is provided from Earth by Professor Aloysius O’Brien O’Rourke Haggarty, informally called Pop by his daughter Cassiopeia. Haggarty’s talkative Martian pet, a gabblerdictum, occasionally joins the crew. Administrative oversight comes from Colonel Raeburn and his highly efficient Venusian secretary Marla.
The series distinguishes Venusian and Martian physiognomy, portraying male Venusians as androgynous and male Martians as more rugged. Although reflecting the gender norms of its era, the character of Marla frequently asserts Venusian competence. The programme was created and written by Roberta Leigh, the first woman in Britain to head her own film production company.
