Summary
A series of kidnappings afflicts Chicago, creating widespread unease and mounting frustration within the police department. Among the officers assigned to the case is Kate Benson, whose perceptive nature and ability to discern underlying patterns set her apart from her colleagues. This intuitive quality, present throughout her life, leads her to act on a hunch and conduct surveillance on a building she believes will be the site of the next abduction. Her instincts prove correct; however, the situation she encounters is far more extraordinary than anticipated. Benson discovers that the perpetrators are not human but Gargoyles. Although she attempts to rescue a young girl from the creatures, her efforts are unsuccessful, and the Gargoyles escape with their captive. She is then required to report the incident to her superiors, who respond with scepticism and concern for her mental state.
Unbeknownst to Benson, another individual had been present during the confrontation. This mysterious man intervened and saved her life, though the child was still lost to the Gargoyles. After her difficult meeting with her superiors, the man approaches her again and reveals the existence of Special Unit 2, a covert division within the Chicago Police Department tasked with confronting non‑human threats and preserving public ignorance of their existence. Benson is immediately assigned to the kidnapping investigation and partnered with Nick O’Malley. Together, they must locate the Gargoyles’ lair and recover the abducted victims before time runs out. The Gargoyles are safeguarding their eggs, which are nearing the end of a seventeen‑year incubation period, and the imminent hatching poses a significant danger due to the creatures’ voracious hunger.
