Summary
In South Korea, Seong Gi‑hun, a divorced father struggling with severe debt and compulsive gambling, receives an invitation to participate in a series of games based on traditional children’s activities, with the promise of a substantial cash reward. He is transported to a remote island where 456 contestants, all facing significant financial hardship, are housed under constant surveillance. The participants wear green tracksuits, surrender their personal belongings, and are monitored by masked guards dressed in pink jumpsuits. Oversight of the competition is conducted by the Front Man, who conceals his identity behind a black mask and uniform.
The players soon discover that elimination from a game results in immediate death, with each fatality adding ₩100 million to a growing prize fund that will ultimately total ₩45.6 billion. Gi‑hun forms alliances with several competitors, including his childhood friend Cho Sang‑woo and the North Korean defector Kang Sae‑byeok, as they attempt to navigate the physical and psychological challenges of the tournament. Meanwhile, police detective Hwang Jun‑ho infiltrates the facility by posing as one of the guards, hoping to uncover the fate of his missing brother.
