Summary
The International Space Police Force, informally known as the Star Cops, was originally composed of a small contingent of part‑time volunteers who were issued policing authority while simultaneously maintaining other occupations. Nathan Spring, a seasoned and often irascible professional detective, is appointed to reorganise and professionalise the unit. A sceptic of the increasingly computer‑driven society in which he lives, Spring believes that excessive reliance on technology discourages independent thought. He gradually assembles an international team, beginning with David Theroux, a young American flight engineer; Pal Kenzy, an Australian officer noted for her abrasive manner; Colin Devis, a blunt and heavy‑set British detective; and later Anna Shoun, a Japanese scientist.
The Star Cops investigate a wide range of offences, including murder, sabotage, theft, industrial espionage, and hijacking. Spring frequently engages in tense, though often restrained, disputes with Alexander Krivenko, the Russian coordinator of Moonbase, where the organisation ultimately establishes its headquarters.
