Summary
The series is set fifteen years after the events of the film and follows the return of the alien, now inhabiting a clone of deceased photojournalist Paul Forrester, who seeks out his teenage son, Scott Hayden Jr., while the two attempt to evade a persistent U.S. government agent and locate Scott’s missing mother, Jenny Hayden.
Each episode centres on the fugitive father and son travelling from place to place, assisting individuals they encounter. Scott gradually teaches his alien father the nuances of human behaviour, while Starman confronts complications arising from Forrester’s indulgent past. Both possess small silvery spheres of alien material that enable limited telekinesis and telepathy; Starman is proficient, whereas Scott is still learning to focus. In the episode Blue Lights, Scott inadvertently creates a rotating ring of blue lights that is mistaken for a UFO. Both characters also demonstrate an empathic ability to connect with animals.
Their movements are continually hindered by government investigator George Fox, who regards them as a threat to humanity. Fox’s hostility extends to Scott, whom he insinuates is a mutant. Despite Fox’s antagonism, Starman shows no malice toward him and even treats a life‑threatening condition Fox suffers before he and Scott escape.
