Summary
In December 2020, the celebrated actor Arthur Leander suffers a fatal collapse on stage during a Chicago performance of King Lear. Among the audience is Jeevan Chaudhary, who, despite lacking medical training, attempts to render assistance. In the ensuing confusion, Jeevan assumes responsibility for Kirsten Raymonde, a young actor left without supervision. While escorting her home, he receives a warning from his sister, Dr. Siya Chaudhary, that a highly virulent strain of influenza has entered the United States from Europe.
Unable to locate Kirsten’s parents upon arriving at her residence, Jeevan decides to take her to the apartment of his brother Frank, a writer. The three secure the premises and stockpile large quantities of food as the pandemic rapidly escalates. From Frank’s windows, they witness a passenger aircraft lose altitude and crash, signalling the catastrophic breakdown of civil infrastructure. After eighty days in isolation, Jeevan and Kirsten emerge into a snow‑covered landscape littered with abandoned vehicles, the population having been devastated by the flu.
Two decades later, an adult Kirsten performs with a travelling theatre troupe while continuing to read a rare graphic novel titled Station Eleven, a work originally owned by Arthur Leander.
