Summary
Stella, an emissary from the planet Stellaris, is dispatched to Earth on a covert assignment to study the emotional capacities of human beings. The mission, conceived as a detached scientific observation, is disrupted when Stella unexpectedly begins to experience emotions herself. Confronted for the first time with unhappiness, she becomes increasingly conflicted about her purpose.
Her advisor, Hal , a computer system responsible for overseeing the mission , concludes that Stella’s developing emotional responses compromise the integrity of the operation. He therefore seeks to terminate the assignment and arrange her immediate return to Stellaris. Stella, however, believes that unresolved obligations remain on Earth. Determined to complete them, she intervenes to halt the scheduled launch of the spacecraft, delaying her departure despite Hal’s objections.
