Summary
As with much of King’s fiction, the narrative is built upon an arresting speculative premise developed through an extended dramatic arc. The story centres on Harlan Williams, an elderly janitor employed at Falco Plains, a covert government research facility. After an explosion in the laboratory kills two scientists, Williams is inadvertently exposed to an unidentified chemical compound. Initially he displays no ill effects, but his wife soon observes marked changes in both his behaviour and physical appearance: Williams is undergoing a reversal of the ageing process.
The government, recognising the potential scientific value of his condition, seeks to apprehend him for study and assigns the uncompromising agent Jude Andrews to the pursuit. Assisted by Terry Spann, a former colleague of Andrews who becomes sympathetic to Williams’s plight, Harlan and his wife, Gina, flee across the country. Their flight culminates in a protracted chase that leads to the story’s dramatic and inevitable climax.
