Summary
The series centres on Chance Harper, a man whose life is marked by an ongoing sequence of improbable and often extraordinary events. Unlike many television protagonists who treat unusual occurrences as routine, Harper is fully aware that the persistent oddities surrounding him are unique to his own experience. His life is characterised by an unusual mixture of good and bad fortune, frequently placing him in the wrong place at precisely the right time. He consistently wins instant‑lottery games, has repeatedly found himself in situations where he is able to save others, and drives a car that appears barely roadworthy due to the numerous accidents it has endured.
Harper’s unusual circumstances appear to trace back to an incident thirty years earlier, when he survived a plane crash that killed 160 people, including his entire family. At approximately three years of age, he was the sole survivor and, with no one able to identify or claim him, was placed for adoption. He was subsequently adopted by the Harper family, who named him Chance in recognition of his remarkable survival.
As an adult, Harper works as a freelance photographer, a profession that allows him to take advantage of his tendency to be present at noteworthy events. Much of his work is published in the local newspaper, where his former girlfriend, Audrey Weston, serves as an editor. Despite their past relationship, the two remain friends, and Weston frequently assigns him work. However, Harper’s unpredictable luck often diverts him from routine assignments.
Harper’s unusual experiences have also brought him into contact with law enforcement on multiple occasions. In the pilot episode, he is arrested and referred to Dr. Ann Richter, a police psychologist. Under hypnosis, Harper recalls fragments of his early life prior to the plane crash, including the existence of an older brother who had not been on the flight. Determined to locate him, Harper eventually succeeds and learns that they are half‑brothers, and that his peculiar luck had been evident even in childhood. Their reunion proves brief, as his brother is soon forced to leave town due to personal difficulties.
