Summary
The series follows Paul Turner, a scientist formerly attached to USAMRIID, whose work involves investigating criminal misuse of advanced scientific research. Turner’s life is irrevocably altered after exposure to biological agents during the Gulf War, leaving him chronically ill and dependent on a clandestine organisation that possesses, and controls access to—his only known cure.
Created by X‑Files, the writer and executive producer Howard Gordon, the programme depicts a covert landscape in which large‑scale corporate interests finance experimental scientific ventures of questionable legality. Turner’s inquiries consistently reveal that each apparent breakthrough conceals deeper and more troubling mysteries.
Following his initial exposure to chemical weapons, Turner spends six years in isolation, battling a degenerative condition that threatens his life. His survival is briefly secured when an enigmatic Asian woman (Vivian Wu) administers a seemingly miraculous treatment, one that proves temporary. The illness subsequently resurfaces at regular intervals, each time requiring her unexplained reappearance to deliver another dose.
After this prolonged absence from public service, Turner returns to the Army as a Special Investigator, tasked with locating individuals responsible for dangerous and unethical scientific experimentation, described metaphorically as the Frankensteins of the world. His conviction that governmental structures are too slow and inefficient to regulate rapid scientific advancement becomes a central theme of the series, which incorporates contemporary issues such as cloning, genetic engineering, and other emerging biotechnologies.
