Summary
Three extra-terrestrials, adopting humanoid form, arrive on Earth to undertake a classified mission. Of the trio, only the designated Supervisor possesses prior knowledge of human customs and behaviour. The remaining two operatives, Cadets Flynn and Niven, exhibit limited understanding of even basic physical and linguistic functions. Their movements are awkward, and their speech consists of convoluted, over‑elaborate constructions derived from archaic English. This manner of expression results from their study of antiquated television broadcasts intercepted on their home world, from which they also adopted their surnames, drawn from early Hollywood cinema.
Shortly after landing, the mission is jeopardised when the Supervisor is accidentally killed by a passing truck. As junior personnel, Flynn and Niven have not been informed of the mission’s purpose, leaving them to navigate Earth unaided while attempting to fulfil objectives they do not fully comprehend.
Pursuing the pair are two government agents, Harry and Rina, whose remit is the investigation of extraterrestrial activity. Their partnership is characterised by constant disagreement: Rina is methodical and procedural, whereas Harry is an idealistic theorist. Although they succeed in locating the cadets on several occasions, Flynn and Niven invariably evade capture.
Complicating matters further are two criminal opportunists, known as the Seedy Man and his associate Rats. Motivated by personal gain, they seek the substantial wealth the aliens have brought to Earth for diplomatic bargaining. In a notable casting choice, the Seedy Man is portrayed by Paul Darrow, best known for his role as Kerr Avon in the 1970s science‑fiction series Blake's 7.
Creator Rob Grant was also know as the co-creator of SF comedy Red Dwarf, also actor Mark Williams who played Cadet Flynn also featured in the early days of the show.
