Summary
The series centres on Ted Stein, a young and contented science professor at a university in Boston. His life changes abruptly when he learns that he has inherited the Bridgewater Inn, a rural Maine establishment formerly owned by his late grandfather. Intending to sell the property, Ted travels to the inn, where he meets Frank, its irritable long‑time caretaker.
Frank reveals that he is a 231‑year‑old creation of Ted’s great‑great‑grandfather, the original Dr Frankenstein, and explains that he requires Ted’s assistance in recreating a vital serum without which he will soon die. Ted elects to remain at the inn both to help Frank and to restore the property in hopes of generating income. His decision frustrates Walt Calvin, a local real‑estate agent who had anticipated purchasing the inn.
The Bridgewater Inn is also home to Nora, who managed the establishment for Ted’s grandfather and had expected to inherit it; her son Brian; and Glenn, a permanent resident of the inn. Their presence contributes to the inn’s unusual domestic environment as Ted attempts to balance scientific responsibility with the practical challenges of running the property.
