Summary
Shigeru (Yamada) is portrayed as a mechanically inclined youth whose interests centre on constructing and modifying machinery. His friend Akio (Imamura) is similarly characterised by an enthusiasm for science and science fiction, while their companion Goro is noted for his fondness for ninja‑themed comics and the practice of judo. During an excursion to a junkyard, Shigeru activates an unidentified device, inadvertently transporting himself to the Edo period. Upon arrival, he is detained by local authorities who regard him with suspicion. His confinement ends when the jail is attacked by ninja, enabling Shigeru to reactivate the device and return to the present amid the ensuing disorder.
Akio asserts that Shigeru has discovered a functioning time machine, and the three boys subsequently design a series of contemporary technological devices intended to impress the ninja of the past. When they travel back in time, their demonstrations of modern technology attract the attention of the chief magistrate, who appoints Shigeru as the official responsible for addressing the region’s "ninja problem." Shigeru’s first captive, however, is a young woman named Yoko, who appeals for leniency by explaining that her family has resorted to criminal activity only because their land was unjustly seized by the ruling authorities.
The boys continue to move back and forth between eras in an attempt to resolve the escalating conflict between the ninja and the Edo government. During one such journey, they inadvertently bring Yoko into the present, where she expresses astonishment at the peaceful conditions of the modern world. Their interventions, however, ultimately exacerbate the hostilities in the past, culminating in Yoko’s death along with numerous other combatants. Disillusioned by the consequences of their actions, the boys return permanently to their own time and discard the time machine, which inexplicably ascends into the air and causes the sky to turn pink.
