Summary
Supercar is depicted as a highly versatile experimental craft capable of travelling over land, across the sea, and through the air, enabling rapid deployment to virtually any location worldwide. Its design incorporates folding wings for aerial flight and a periscope for underwater operations, reflecting its multipurpose engineering and the programme’s emphasis on technological ingenuity.
The principal characters include Professor Rudolph Popkiss, Supercar’s paternal and mid‑European inventor, and Dr Horatio Beaker, his British scientific assistant, characterised by his balding appearance and distinctive stammer. The craft is piloted by Mike Mercury, a courageous test pilot who undertakes the majority of Supercar’s missions. The team also includes Jimmy Gibson, a ten‑year‑old boy who becomes the first individual rescued by Supercar following a plane crash, and Mitch, Jimmy’s mischievous talking monkey, who serves as a light‑hearted companion.
Opposing the protagonists are several recurring antagonists. Chief among them is Masterspy, a deep‑voiced and calculating mercenary determined to steal Supercar for his own purposes. He is assisted by Zarin, a frail, worm‑like subordinate. Their British counterparts, Harper and Judd, similarly seek to obtain Supercar, providing additional adversarial pressure throughout the series.
The programme blends adventure, science fiction, and technological fantasy, illustrating themes of experimental aviation, heroic rescue narratives, and classic adventure antagonists within the framework of early Supermarionation television.
