Summary
Set in the near future, Superstorm depicts an intensifying Atlantic hurricane season in the southern United States, exacerbated by the effects of climate change. With meteorologists predicting multiple Category 5 storms, surpassing the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, a Category 4 event, the series follows a scientific initiative tasked with exploring experimental methods to influence the trajectory and strength of major tropical cyclones. Developed by the production team behind Supervolcano, the drama interweaves scientific inquiry with interpersonal conflict, professional rivalry, and ethical dilemmas surrounding attempts to manipulate extreme weather systems.
The narrative centres on Project Stormshield, a multidisciplinary research group assembled by George Katzenberg of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The team comprises Princeton professor Dan Abrams; English field scientist Sara Hughes; computer modeller Lance Resnick; meteorologist Munish Loomba; research assistant Ralf Dewitt; and computing specialist Holly Zabrieski. Their mandate is to investigate technologies capable of altering hurricane behaviour, an idea once considered speculative but now deemed essential in light of increasingly destructive storms.
In the opening instalment, Katzenberg brings the team together and authorises an initial field experiment. After months of preparatory research, and with the hurricane season imminent, Project Stormshield receives clearance to seed a developing storm, Hurricane Agatha, using techniques originally explored by the U.S. government’s Stormfury project in the 1960s. Sara Hughes, whose grandfather participated in Stormfury, leads the operation and aims to validate the earlier research. When illness prevents her from flying into the storm, Ralf Dewitt undertakes the mission in her place. Although the seeding appears successful, the operation culminates in a serious accident.
