Summary
Naval personnel in the South Antarctic Sea, a household in Wilmington, North Carolina, researchers at an oceanographic institute in Monterey, and fishermen operating in the Gulf of Mexico share an unexpected connection: each is poised to encounter an unprecedented form of marine life. The organism appears strikingly beautiful, exhibits behaviour that seems benign, even playful, and possesses the ability to warm surrounding waters. Yet none of these groups realise that their discovery marks the threshold of a global catastrophe. Surface unfolds as a drama driven by continually developing mysteries and long‑range narrative arcs.
