Summary
A decade prior to the events of the narrative, a catastrophic viral pandemic known as the Sick (or H5G9) precipitated the collapse of global civilisation in an event referred to as the Great Crumble. The disease eradicated most of the human population, and from the onset of the crisis, infants began to be born as human‑animal hybrids, exhibiting a range of animal traits and physiologies. Uncertain whether hybrids were the origin of the virus or a consequence of it, surviving humans frequently regarded them with fear and hostility.
The central narrative follows Gus, a part‑deer hybrid raised in isolation by his father, whom he calls Pubba. When Pubba succumbs to the Sick shortly after Gus’s ninth birthday, the boy uncovers a box buried beneath a tree containing artefacts from before the Great Crumble, including a photograph of his mother marked with the word Colorado. After accidentally starting a fire that attracts hybrid hunters, Gus is rescued by Tommy Jepperd, a solitary traveller drawn to the smoke. Although initially reluctant, Jepperd, whom Gus nicknames Big Man, agrees to accompany him on a journey to Colorado in search of his mother.
Parallel storylines follow other key figures: Dr. Aditya Singh, who seeks a cure for the Sick that has afflicted his wife for years; Bear, founder and leader of the Animal Army, a group dedicated to protecting hybrids while she searches for her missing sister; and Aimee Eden, a former therapist who establishes a sanctuary for hybrids known as the Preserve.
