Summary
The concept for the science‑fiction television series was developed by Theodore Sturgeon and Mort Abrahams and was presented under the auspices of the Science Fiction League of America, an organisation distinct from the earlier Science Fiction League and possibly created specifically for the production. In 1951, Sturgeon and Abrahams approached Robert A. Heinlein with a proposal to assemble a group of science‑fiction authors to write teleplays for a planned series titled Tomorrow Is Yours, the programme’s original working title. A subsequent agreement with Richard Gordon and George Foley granted the producers first selection rights from a catalogue comprising approximately 2,000 short stories and 13 novels authored by members of the League.
Tales of Tomorrow served as the first dramatized television showcase for several writers, notably Arthur C. Clarke. Additional early science‑fiction authors whose work was adapted for the series included Fredric Brown (“The Last Man on Earth”; “Age of Peril”), Philip Wylie (“Blunder”), C. M. Kornbluth (“The Little Black Bag”), and Stanley G. Weinbaum (“The Miraculous Serum”). Conceived as a programme for adult audiences, at a time when most science‑fiction television was directed toward children, the series aimed to integrate elements of mystery with speculative themes, emphasising rapid pacing and sustained suspense.
