Summary
Alice Putkin (Dawn French) is a cheerful tourism officer living a quiet and uneventful life in the Lake District. Her long‑standing relationship with her boyfriend, Barry (Owen Teale), the local police constable, is similarly sedate and marked by a lack of romantic attention. On the evening of their anniversary, Alice becomes disillusioned when she finds Barry socialising with friends and leaving her alone to deal with his neglected laundry, prompting her to reconsider the direction of her life.
At the same time, an extra-terrestrial visitor named Ted (Stephen Tompkinson) arrives in the area, having landed his spacecraft in a nearby lake. Ted is an exile from a distant world whose population has evolved into hermaphrodites, leaving rare single‑sex individuals such as himself unable to find partners. Wandering into town in search of companionship, he encounters Alice, and the two quickly form a connection.
A local hermit, known for his claims of alien sightings, is discovered dead near the lake, and Barry attends the scene in his official capacity. When Barry observes Alice’s growing rapport with Ted, jealousy motivates him to scrutinise the stranger more closely. Meanwhile, an alien‑hunting organisation known as the Foundation detects Ted’s presence and begins pursuing him with the intention of capturing him.
As the situation escalates, Ted goes on the run, aware that his time on Earth may be limited. He ultimately reveals his true form to Alice, forcing her to confront the reality of his origins. With the Foundation closing in, Alice must decide whether to leave Earth with Ted or remain in her familiar life with Barry.
