Summary

Set in the year 2043, the narrative follows Jake Cardigan, a former police officer who has been framed by an unidentified adversary and sentenced to cryogenic imprisonment for allegedly trafficking in Tek, an illegal electronic neuro‑stimulant that enables users to escape reality through immersive artificial experiences. Although his sentence is not complete, Jake is released after four years and placed on parole through the intervention of Walter Bascom, the influential head of the Cosmos Detective Agency. Bascom requires Jake’s assistance in locating a missing scientist, and Jake agrees on the condition that Bascom help him clear his name.

Upon returning to society, Jake discovers that his wife has divorced him, remarried, and turned their son against him. His only remaining ally is Sid Gomez, his former partner on the police force and now an operative at Cosmos. Jake also faces hostility from Officer Winger, an android detective who resents Jake’s early release and remains openly antagonistic toward him.

Across the first four television films, Jake succeeds in proving his innocence and rebuilding his relationship with his son. During these events he meets Beth Kitteridge, daughter of the missing scientist he was hired to find, and the two develop a romantic relationship. With the transition to the weekly series, several changes occur within the supporting cast. Nika is introduced as Bascom’s office manager and resident expert hacker, frequently supplying Jake with critical information. William Shatner appears briefly as Bascom in early episodes before departing to promote Star Trek Generations, though the character continues to be referenced. Beth is written out of the series with the possibility of a future return, while Sid is killed in the line of duty.

Jake later forms a relationship with Lt. Sam Houston, a police officer he meets during an investigation. Sam eventually resigns from the force and becomes Jake’s new partner at Cosmos, continuing the agency’s efforts to confront Tek‑related crime and other high‑technology threats.
