Summary

The narrative is initially set in the year 2149, a period in which extreme overpopulation and critically deteriorating air quality threaten the survival of all terrestrial life. Upon discovering a temporal rift capable of supporting one‑way human transit, scientists establish a programme of organised pilgrimages to a parallel time stream corresponding to Earth’s Cretaceous Period. The resulting settlement is named Terra Nova, derived from Latin for New Earth. The series centres on police officer James “Jim” Shannon, his wife Elisabeth, and their three children, Josh, Maddy, and Zoe, as they join the colony.

Elisabeth Shannon is selected for the pilgrimage on the basis of her medical expertise, accompanied by her two older children. Her husband, imprisoned for violating population‑control legislation by concealing a third child and assaulting an enforcement officer, clandestinely boards the pilgrimage transport. Upon arrival, he persuades Terra Nova’s leader, Commander Nathaniel Taylor, that his law‑enforcement experience is of value to the colony’s administration.

Opposition to Terra Nova and its leadership arises from a separatist faction known as the Sixers, named for their arrival during the Sixth Pilgrimage. Acting in concert with corporate interests in 2149, the Sixers seek to exploit the Cretaceous environment for industrial gain, transporting resources to the future at the expense of ecological devastation. It is subsequently revealed that Commander Taylor’s estranged adult son, Lucas, is aligned with the Sixers and is instrumental in advancing their objectives.

Near the end of the series, Lucas succeeds in perfecting two‑way temporal travel, enabling the industrialists, supported by a private military force known as the Phoenix Group, to launch an incursion into Terra Nova. In response, Jim Shannon travels back to 2149 and destroys the temporal gateway, severing access to the Cretaceous. The Phoenix Group retreats into the nearby Badlands, where the colonists later discover a wooden ship’s figurehead, apparently deposited by an earlier temporal anomaly.
