Summary
The narrative centres on a young scientist conducting research into the behavioural dynamics of twins. During the course of her study, she becomes romantically involved with one of her subjects. Aware that his brother is imprisoned for murder, she begins to suspect that her partner may have been responsible for the sexual assault of a colleague.
Her investigation uncovers a far more complex truth: the men she is studying are not merely twins but members of a cohort of eight individuals created through clandestine cloning experiments conducted by a military research organisation in the 1960s. The original architects of the programme have since become wealthy industrialists. They now seek to sell their company, but disclosure of the illegal genetic‑cloning project would jeopardise the lucrative merger they are attempting to secure. Determined to protect their financial interests, they attempt to suppress the truth surrounding the experiment and its surviving subjects.
