Summary
Threshold follows Dr. Molly Caffrey, a crisis‑management strategist whose contingency plan for extra-terrestrial contact is activated after a U.S. naval crew reports a UFO encounter and several sailors die. The plan establishes the covert Red Team, comprising microbiologist Nigel Fenway, aerospace engineer Lucas Pegg, mathematician‑linguist Arthur Ramsey, paramilitary operative Sean Cavennaugh, and later Daphne Larson, all overseen by Deputy National Security Advisor J. T. Baylock.
The team discovers that the alien presence is attempting to rewrite human DNA through an audio signal and a recurring fractal triskelion pattern interpreted as a triple‑helix genetic structure. Their investigation requires strict secrecy and frequent impersonation of government agencies.
Caffrey, Cavennaugh, and Pegg are partially exposed to the signal, resulting in neurological effects such as shared dreams and hallucinations; affected individuals are termed dreamers. A continuing subplot examines the psychological strain placed on Caffrey as she navigates the escalating crisis.
