Summary
In the year 2500, human civilisation has undergone extensive technological and biological advancement. Individuals travel by matter‑beam or personal mini‑jets, sleep has become unnecessary, and the Moon functions as an artificial sun, regulating global temperature and eliminating night. Human lifespans routinely exceed three centuries, and governance is administered by the Raad der Wijzen ("Council of the Wise").
Within this society lives Peter Bergen, an archaeologist. Together with his colleague An Bal, he discovers the tomb of Malegijs, a thirteenth‑century magician. Inside the tomb they uncover the Stone of Wisdom. An’s brother, a cybernetic specialist, has secretly constructed a time machine in defiance of the Council’s authority. Using this device, referred to as the time capsule, Peter travels to the Middle Ages, where he rescues a young woman named Isolde.
Peter and Isolde subsequently journey through various periods of history, but a temporal barrier prevents them from travelling beyond Antwerp in the 1960s. Ultimately, the disruptions are resolved, and Isolde accompanies Peter to live in the twenty‑sixth century.
