Summary
Kazuko Shimada loses consciousness during an incident in her school laboratory and later awakens outdoors in the snow, retaining only the memory of a lavender scent. Believing she has been displaced to the following day, she witnesses a mis‑thrown snowball shatter a window and injure a classmate, after which she abruptly returns to her original moment in the present. When the events she observed subsequently occur exactly as foreseen, her classmate Kazuo Fukamachi, whose true identity is Ken Sogol, discloses that she inhaled a compound he created. Sogol explains that he is a time traveller from the future, stranded in the distant past of his own world until he can develop a chemical capable of propelling its user forward rather than backward in time.
Kazuko later receives a telepathic distress signal from Ken, who claims to be trapped in August in Hokkaido. She acquires additional lavender compound in an effort to assist him but realises she does not know how to initiate the required temporal leap. On the advice of her teacher, Mr. Fukushima, she consults a psychiatrist, who determines that her time‑leaps occur only when she experiences an unexpected shock. Fukushima obligingly startles her with a raised stick, triggering the effect and enabling her to reach and rescue Ken.
Ken eventually perfects the forward‑moving chemical, only to discover that a cleaning woman has accidentally inhaled it. He and Kazuko trace her twenty‑seven years into the past, to a World War II hospital, where she intends to use the compound to transport her dying daughter into the future. Her body abruptly vanishes, and Ken explains that she has been erased for violating a fundamental rule of time travel. Soon afterwards, he announces his intention to return to his own era and erase the memories of those who know him. Although Kazuko forgets him entirely, the scent of lavender continues to evoke a persistent, inexplicable nostalgia.
