Summary

The narrative is set in the year 2193, where police officer Darien Lambert investigates a series of fugitives whose trails consistently terminate in Washington, D.C. The disappearance of a captured criminal from custody leads Lambert to Dr. Mordicai Sahmbi, a respected scientist formerly engaged in time‑travel research before the termination of his funding. Despite the official cessation of his work, Sahmbi has secretly completed a functioning time‑transport device known as Trax.

Trax possesses two critical limitations. First, it can only transport matter to a point precisely 200 years in the past and subsequently return it to 2193. Second, a human subject can undergo the process only twice, one round trip, after which further exposure results in severe cellular degradation and potentially death. To finance continued experimentation, Sahmbi illicitly employs Trax to send criminals into the past, where they can evade detection, charging substantial fees for the service.

After Sahmbi himself escapes into the 20th century, authorities determine that Lambert will pursue him and repatriate both Sahmbi and the numerous fugitives who have taken refuge in the past. Lambert’s principal support is Selma, an ultra‑advanced computer system, exceptional even by 2193 standards, concealed within an AT&T Universal Card. Selma contains comprehensive data on all fugitives and extensive knowledge of 20th‑century history, and is capable of interfacing with contemporary computer networks and telecommunications systems. She manifests to Lambert as a holographic projection of a middle‑aged woman, visible only when he is alone.

Lambert’s sole weapon, disguised as a car alarm, incorporates a stun device and a pellet mechanism capable of reversing the Trax process, thereby returning time travellers to the 23rd century.

Upon establishing himself in the 20th century, Sahmbi gradually constructs a power base, frequently collaborating with the criminals he previously dispatched into the past and repeatedly clashing with Lambert. Although Lambert remains vigilant for Sahmbi, the majority of his efforts involve locating and apprehending the fugitives, numbering over one hundred, who have integrated themselves into 20th‑century society. Most continue their criminal activities and are subsequently returned to 2193. On occasion, Lambert encounters individuals who have reformed and become productive members of contemporary society; in such cases, he permits them to remain in the past. Lambert also discovers that Sahmbi has transported several non‑criminals, individuals who sought a simpler existence, into the 20th century.
