Summary
Set in 1979, the story follows Miyamoto Takumi, whose life is abruptly altered when he encounters a mysterious young man named Tokio in a park in Asakusa. Tokio claims to have come from the future and identifies himself as Takumi’s son. Initially dismissing the assertion as a joke, Takumi gradually begins to believe him when Tokio demonstrates the ability to predict future events, construct unusual devices, and exhibit inexplicable powers. Over time, Takumi’s scepticism gives way to reluctant acceptance.
In the present day of 2004, the adult Tokio suffers from a severe illness and lies in critical condition. As the fifty‑year‑old Takumi watches over him, he recalls the extraordinary events that occurred twenty‑five years earlier. Father and son had crossed temporal boundaries to meet in the past, travelling together through Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka in search of Takumi’s missing lover, Chizuru. During this two‑week journey, the younger Takumi, embittered and emotionally withdrawn, begins to mature through his interactions with the son who has arrived from the future.
Tokio, observing his father’s younger self, ultimately leaves him with an encouraging message before their time together concludes, shaping Takumi’s development and understanding of his own life across the intervening decades.
