Summary
Bobbi Anderson, a novelist living near Haven, Maine, uncovers a buried metallic object that she and her partner, Jim "Gard" Gardner, begin excavating. As more of the structure is revealed, the townspeople develop insomnia, telepathy, and an obsessive drive to build glowing green devices from household materials. These changes intensify, affecting even children, and one invention causes a boy, Davey Brown, to disappear.
Sheriff Ruth Merrill’s investigation falters as the townspeople grow increasingly consumed by their inventions and physically deteriorate. Gard, protected by a metal plate in his skull, remains largely unaffected and discovers that several residents have been captured and used to power alien machinery hidden in Bobbi’s garage. He learns that Davey is being held inside the buried craft.
Gard infiltrates the possessed townspeople and convinces Bobbi to descend into the object, where they discover an alien spacecraft powered by the mental energy of Davey and draining the life force of Haven’s residents. Bobbi breaks free of the alien influence, rescues Davey, and escapes to the surface.
Gard pilots the ship skyward and destroys it, ending the influence over Haven. The story concludes with Bobbi mourning Gard’s sacrifice.
