Summary

Tonyo Dela Cruz, a monitor‑lizard hunter and devoted father, earns his livelihood by tracking and capturing bayawak in the forested areas surrounding his community. During one of his nocturnal hunting excursions, he witnesses a group of men assaulting a woman. Tonyo intervenes in an attempt to rescue her, enabling the victim to escape, but he is fatally stabbed by the assailants. Believing him dead, the men dispose of his body in a nearby river.

A supernatural entity subsequently appears and grants Tonyo a transformative privilege: he is chosen as the bearer of an Agimat, a mystical amulet. The object manifests as a belt buckle that imbues him with the instincts and physical attributes associated with a monitor lizard, including the temporary transformation of his arms into reptilian limbs and the acquisition of enhanced strength and agility. Empowered by these abilities, Tonyo systematically tracks down and kills the men responsible for the assault.

Tonyo later learns that his wife, Maring, has been attacked by the same criminal syndicate he previously encountered. She is sexually assaulted by the group’s leader and dies after her skull is crushed during the incident. Upon discovering the circumstances of her death, Tonyo becomes determined to locate and eliminate the individuals responsible, directing his efforts toward dismantling the syndicate and avenging his wife.
