Summary
Torch is set in a future Europe in which societal structures have collapsed, leaving the population dispersed across island communities that have reverted to pre‑industrial conditions. Five teenagers discover an elderly man dying on a deserted beach; he identifies himself as the Guardian of a treasure and declares that one of them must now assume his role. With his final breath, he implores them to retrieve the treasure from its hidden location and to find the Games.
The group embarks on a journey that leads to kidnapping, imprisonment, enslavement and pursuit, as they encounter a succession of isolated societies, each defined by distinct values, self‑sufficiency, fervent religious devotion, materialism or intensely inward‑looking intellectualism. Their quest ultimately brings them not to the Games themselves but to a deeper understanding of their own identities. The treasure proves to be the legendary Olympic torch, and the search becomes a symbolic pursuit of an ideal: the principle that participation, rather than victory, is the true measure of the Games’ meaning.
