Summary
The narrative centres on Dorien Dubois and Jacob Boon, who experience an anomalous event during a train journey from Rotterdam to The Hague. A sudden flash of light startles the passengers, after which Dorien and Jacob discover that they have been transported far into the future.
They arrive in the year 6964, a period in which humanity has become extinct and has been supplanted by a civilisation of robots. These robots are engaged in attempts to artificially recreate human beings, though their efforts remain unsuccessful. To compensate, they have used a time‑travel device to bring several individuals from earlier eras into their robot‑dominated future.
Among those transported are Dorien and Jacob, a knight from the Middle Ages, and a prehistoric human. All are held captive within the robots’ city. The group soon resolves to escape, but fleeing from a society governed entirely by robots proves to be a formidable challenge.
