Summary
Set in near‑future Japan, the narrative depicts a nationwide effort to conceal the existence of individuals whose exceptional intellectual abilities have been designated as vital national assets. The government asserts that these geniuses are essential to the country’s artistic and technological advancement, particularly in generating innovations capable of attracting substantial foreign investment. However, their heightened intelligence is accompanied by a severe side effect: they involuntarily project their private thoughts to those around them. To prevent the psychological harm and social collapse that would result if the affected individuals became aware of this condition, the authorities relocate them to remote towns whose residents receive tax incentives for maintaining the pretence that nothing unusual is occurring. These individuals are referred to as transparents.
Kenichi, portrayed by Odagiri, is one such transparent. A gifted biotechnician, he frustrates his government handlers by insisting on pursuing a career as a surgeon rather than focusing on research. His continued medical training is viewed as a loss of potential national benefit, and his telepathic condition prevents him from qualifying fully, as he cannot conceal distressing information from patients. As conventional methods of persuasion fail, the government deploys Yoko, played by Tsuruta, an undercover military psychiatrist tasked with influencing Kenichi’s decisions by any means necessary.
