Summary
Set in a post‑apocalyptic future, the narrative follows thousands of specialised operatives tasked with preventing the final collapse of civilisation. Known as travelers, these operatives have their consciousnesses projected back through time and implanted into the bodies of present‑day individuals who are on the verge of death, thereby minimising disruption to the established timeline. The transfer process requires precise spatial data-time, elevation, latitude, and longitude (TELL coordinates), recorded through 21st‑century smartphones and GPS systems and preserved for use in the future. Transfers cannot be safely performed to any point earlier than a previously completed transfer.
Upon arrival in the present, travelers study social media and public records to learn about their hosts and maintain the hosts’ existing lives as operational cover. Organised into teams of five, they carry out missions assigned by the Director, an artificial‑intelligence quantum system that monitors the timeline from the future. These missions are intended to avert a sequence of catastrophic events that threaten the survival of the planet.
The Director communicates instructions through prepubescent children, who can be temporarily animated without fatal consequences, unlike adults, whose bodies cannot withstand the strain of direct control.
