Summary
In 2089, Britain remains trapped in a pre‑industrial condition following the global invasion of the Tripods. Their domination has persisted for decades, enforced through the process known as Capping, a rite imposed on most humans upon reaching adolescence. Each cap consists of a metal plate fused to the skull, enabling the Tripods to transmit commands directly into the wearer’s mind. Although the Capped retain the ability to perform ordinary occupations, such as butchery, farming, blacksmithing, or carpentry, and may marry and maintain households, they are deprived of genuine autonomy. No individual who has undergone Capping is ever entirely free.
Against this backdrop, Will Parker (John Shackley), forewarned by a local resistance contact, resolves to evade the procedure. His decision initiates a prolonged escape from his village and the authority of the Tripods. He is subsequently accompanied by his cousin Henry (Jim Baker) and later by Jean‑Paul Deliet (Ceri Seel), a resourceful French youth nicknamed Beanpole. Together, they embark on a hazardous journey that draws them into the wider struggle against the Tripods’ rule.
