Summary
Masklin, a Nome living with his companions in an increasingly untenable settlement beside a motorway verge, leads a desperate flight in search of a sustainable home. Their journey brings them to a large department store, where they encounter an extensive community of Nomes who have lived undetected among the fixtures and stock for generations. This group adheres to a rigid belief system asserting that The Store constitutes the entirety of the universe and denying the existence of any external world, a doctrine that complicates Masklin’s efforts to warn them of the building’s imminent demolition.
Masklin’s discovery of a small artefact known simply as The Thing reveals the true origins of the Nome species. The device, a sentient computer from an ancient Nome Starship, explains that all Nomes are descendants of extra-terrestrial explorers who crash‑landed on Earth thousands of years earlier. With The Thing’s guidance, Masklin formulates a plan to evacuate the store community before their environment is destroyed. Through a combination of resourcefulness, determination and good fortune, he and his companions succeed in rescuing the store Nomes and securing their escape.
