Summary
Gus Roberts serves as the lead engineer at Smyle, the United Kingdom’s largest mobile network operator and Internet service provider. Outside his professional duties, he pursues an active interest in paranormal investigation. His routine is disrupted when his supervisor, David, assigns him a new partner: Elton John, a recent recruit whose temperament and interests initially appear incompatible with Gus’s. Despite Gus’s early misgivings, the two develop a close working relationship, collaborating both in their technical roles and, to varying degrees, in Gus’s extracurricular investigations. Elton, however, remains markedly less enthusiastic about the supernatural than his colleague.
Their activities intersect with Astrid, a young woman who experiences sustained pursuit by multiple spectral entities, first within a house and subsequently in a hospital. After escaping into the countryside, she encounters Gus and Elton, becoming integrated into their circle. The narrative also introduces Elton’s sister Helen, an agoraphobic cosplayer characterised by nervousness and social anxiety, and Richard, Gus’s irritable father‑in‑law, whose presence adds further domestic tension.
